Resistance to thermal cracking

The main requirements for rough rolling rolls are usually strength and resistance to thermal cracking; The working roll weight of a small 20 high rolling mill is only about 100 grams, while the support roll weight of a wide and thick plate rolling mill has exceeded 200 tons. When selecting rollers, the main material for safe load-bearing capacity (various grades of cast iron, cast steel, or forged steel, etc.) should be selected based on the basic strength requirements of the rolling mill for the rollers.

hardness

The precision rolling speed is relatively high, and the rolled products must have a certain surface quality, with hardness, wear resistance, and other main requirements for it. Then consider the wear resistance that the roller should have during use. Due to the complex wear mechanism of rollers, including mechanical stress, thermal effect during rolling, cooling effect, chemical effect of lubricating medium, and other effects, there is no unified indicator for comprehensive evaluation of roller wear resistance. Due to the ease of measurement of hardness and the ability to reflect wear resistance under certain conditions, the radial hardness curve is generally used to approximate the wear resistance index of rolling rolls.

Impact resistance

In addition, there are some special requirements for the roller, such as when the reduction is large, requiring the roller to have strong biting ability and better impact resistance;

Smoothness

When rolling thin gauge products, strict requirements are placed on the rigidity, uniformity of microstructure and performance, processing accuracy, and surface smoothness of the rollers;

Cutting performance

When rolling complex section steel, consideration should also be given to the cutting performance of the working layer of the roller body.

When selecting rollers, some of the performance requirements for the rollers are often contradictory to each other, and the cost of purchasing and maintaining the rollers is expensive. Therefore, it is necessary to fully weigh the advantages and disadvantages of technology and economy to decide whether to use cast or forged, alloy or non alloy, single material or composite material.
