There are various classification methods for rollers, mainly including: (1) strip steel rollers, profile steel rollers, wire rod rollers, etc. according to product types; (2) According to the position of the rolling rolls in the rolling mill series, they are divided into blooming rolls, rough rolling rolls, finishing rolls, etc; (3) According to the roll function, there are scale breaking rolls, piercing rolls, leveling rolls, etc; (4) According to the material of the rollers, they are divided into steel rollers, cast iron rollers, hard alloy rollers, ceramic rollers, etc; (5) According to manufacturing methods, there are casting rolls, forging rolls, surfacing rolls, sleeve rolling rolls, etc; (6) According to the state of the rolled steel, there are hot rolling rolls and cold rolling rolls. Various classifications can be combined accordingly to give rolling rolls a clearer meaning, such as centrifugal cast high chromium cast iron work rolls for hot-rolled strip steel.
The commonly used roller materials and applications are shown in the table. The performance and quality of rolls generally depend on their chemical composition and manufacturing method, and can be evaluated by their microstructure, physical and mechanical properties, as well as the type of residual stress present inside the rolls (see Roll Inspection). The use effect of rollers in rolling mills not only depends on the material and metallurgical quality of the rollers, but also on the usage conditions, roller design, and operation and maintenance.
